2011, a year away from the prophesized devastation of the world by the Mayans. Can the fragments which have been left for the next generation still be salvaged by mankind or will we simply serve as catalysts to the said end of the world?
Technology is boosting. 5 years ago, we amused ourselves with the wonders of an antenna phone. Now, most technological devices have already reached another level of convenience. Camera phones, iphones, touch phones and etc. have been introduced to the market and patronized by a large scale of population not only in the US and Japan. These high tech devices have touched the interest and pockets of Filipinos as well.
Aside from the field of communication, the world has developed various vehicles to speed up work and to make travelling faster and more convenient. Luxury cars, planes, ferries and etc. have provided us such comforts.
Once upon a certain century most of the products we utilize to this very day were man-made. However with the arrival of Applied Science, in this generation we are provided with uniformly-made and certified high quality merchandise such as food, clothes and other necessities.
The advancement of the great scientific minds which existed then and now is reflected in the everyday life of the norm. What we see around us are the results of what we call industrialization.
With great power comes great responsibility; with great advancement comes greater risks. Have you ever heard of the term domino effect? For example, a certain mineral is at the brink of extinction. Once its quantity decreases and reaches its annex, all the other life forms which greatly depend on it will most probably suffer the same fate and so on.
In communication, using mobile phones causes exposure to radioactivity which not only damages living organisms’ health but the environment’s as well. The release of smoke and spill of gas from vehicles and the rubbage from factories in transportation and industry have brought about a pandemic to many parts of the world.
Are the technological and scientific advancements we enjoy today to be blamed for the possible calamities which may bombard us tomorrow?
No. Mankind has the power control what he has started what we face now are merely the results of the abuse of our own work. In other words we lacked the disciple because we failed to look at the dark side of advancement and merely bit the bright side. We failed to cushion the negative impact of these changes for we neglected to pay in the law of equivalent exchange.
Nevertheless, once controlled there is a skyscraping probability that we can counter the chaos we have started and face what we call “True Development”. All we need are the three pillars which can truly aid us towards a conclusion to the fear bound prophecy; Science, Technology and Sustainability.
